One of the stories that surrounded Alabama fall camp was what would happen at quarterback. Returning redshirt junior Mac Jones took over for the injured Tua Tagovailoa and played well for the most part. Then comes 5 star sensation Bryce Young from California. And as always is the case, the new guy became the hot topic of discussion and many questioned if Mac could lead this Tide team to a championship season or not and believed it was just a matter of time before Bryce took over the job. Then Saturday night happened…..
In the 2020 season debut, all Mac Jones did was complete 75% of his passes for 249 yards and 2 TD’s against a tough Missouri defense. Now, before you laugh and say “it was just Missouri”, go back and look at the 2019 defensive team stats and you will find Missouri was a top 20 defense and they returned 8 starters from that unit, including their leader at linebacker Nick Bolton.
Mac was able to distribute the ball pretty evenly between his two All American receivers Devonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. Smith finished with 8 catches for 89 yards while Waddle owned the Missouri secondary with 8 catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Mac completed passes to 4 other receivers besides Waddle and Smith.
While there is no question that freshman Bryce Young is extremely talented and the future of the program, but Saturday night Mac Jones left no doubt of whom QB1 was for this season.
